The keys to unlocking barriers to learning

About this site

Thank you for visiting this website.  It has evolved in response to the unprecedented changes occurring in how course content is delivered to students at the University of Kansas.  A group of committed KU professionals representing teaching, libraries, technology, access, people with disabilities, and service provision collaborated to provide this information as a gateway to you as you use technology to create new and exciting ways for students to engage with content in your discipline.

As more and more courses at every level include online content as all or part of the instructional plan, attention must be devoted to assuring that the content is accessible .  Courses will reach students well beyond Lawrence, indeed all over the world.  Their needs for access to text, audio and video will be unpredictable and varied.  Designing your course to ensure complete access from the start will not only meet the requirements of the law, but also help to foster engagement in the learning process as well as positive interest in the University of Kansas.  This site will keep evolving as course designs and technology continue to change.  We look forward to your questions and feedback which you can direct to Kit Cole,

The following video, shared with permission from WebAIM, is less than 12 minutes long and demonstrates the barriers people with disabilities face when accessing electronic content. If you ever wondered how screen reader software works, this is a nice introduction.
